Having a flat tire in the middle of a ride is certainly a bad thing for bike riders. The good news is that flat tires are easy to repair. One of the tools to fix flat tires is portable bike pump; you really should carry this tool for a long distance cycling. Alastair Warren, an industrial designer, did some research on existing bike pump in the market. He found out that current bike pump mechanisms give poor user experience and radical new approach is needed. He started to design a portable bike pump for New Zealand mountain bikers. The pump has slightly ergonomic oval shape for greater air capacity while at the same time maintaining a comfortable hand grip. It features four axis of flexibility, comfortable stroke, and flexible nozzle. The regular weight and size makes this pump look like any other bike pump, but it offers a completely new level of comfort and efficiency not just for professional bikers, but also for recreational bike riders.

Anklelite & Baglite Lighting Systems Review 0

Riding a bike or a horse is both a good exercise and a cool way of transportation, but sometimes it can be very dangerous specially when there are motor vehicles near you. Many accidents happen when the riders are not visible to cars or motorbikes, and this is usual at night or road junctions. There are many lights in the market but usually they fail at making your sides more visible. Pedalite has some products to solve this and what is even better, they need no batteries.

Pedalite has 2 wearable products, the Anklelite and the Baglite. The Anklelite, as its name indicates, is a strap with reflective material that can be used in any kind of sport and can be attached firmly to your arms or legs. It has a plastic screen and inside there are 2 orange bright LEDs and a small solar panel. Just with one hour of sunlight it has enough power for 6 hours flashing. It has a switch to change between charging and in-use and a button to select the mode: off, on, flashing.

The Baglite has 2 shoulder straps and wider rear part. It uses 3 of those plastic screens with solar panels, one with white LEDs for each of the front straps and a red one for the rear. It uses elastic straps with velcro to be attached on a a backpack or directly as a harness. The equestrian version of the Baglite also includes a high visibility tabard.

Thanks to these solar powered lights you don’t have to worry anymore about getting fresh batteries for your lights and you will be seen from nearly 1 kilometer away. These lights are also very light and comfortable and are eco-friendly both in their power source and production.
Pedalite has also pedals that have a white, an orange and a red LED for the front, side and rear of the pedal respectively. They don’t use batteries or sunlight but pedalling as its power source and they are shock and water proof. They offer a 360º visibility with 1 kilometer range.

The verdict

All the Pedalite products are well made and although they are a bit pricey, the cost of batteries in just few months of constant use compensates so the pay for themselves. Also they can be recharged with direct sunlight or artificial light so you can just wear them all the time knowing that you’ll always have positioning lights with you. Just in case you should also bring with you an emergency light and lights to see your surroundings if you plan to go through non illuminated areas.

Recently, in a laboratory outside Seattle, I ate a piece of buttered toast that I will remember for the rest of my life. The bread itself was not extraordinary, but it was spread thickly with the brightest-green butter I've ever seen. It was not true butter, but rather an extract of pure green peas. Fresh peas are blended to a puree, then spun in a centrifuge at 13 times the force of gravity. The force separates the puree into three discrete layers: on the bottom, a bland puck of starch; on the top, vibrant-colored, seductively sweet pea juice; and separating the two, a thin layer of the pea's natural fat, pea-green and unctuous. A standard pea yields about 3 percent fat, so the half-ounce of glistening viridian on my toast was the equivalent of perhaps a pound and a half of peas condensed into a single bite.

I was eating with Dr. Nathan Myhrvold, in the rather amazing kitchen at the heart of his 20,000-square-foot laboratory.

Around us stood shelves of hydrocolloids and emulsifiers, freeze-drying and spray-drying apparatus, a battery of immersion circulators, homogenizers, vacuum chambers, and even less readily identifiable laboratory equipment that Myhrvold and his team have shanghaied for culinary purposes. "I never want to work again in a kitchen without a centrifuge," Maxime Bilet, the kitchen's head chef of research and development, tells me.

This kitchen is the home base of Modernist Cuisine, a rather ambitious cookbook project that Myhrvold first outlined in 2006. He holds Ph.D.s in mathematical economics and theoretical physics, studied with Stephen Hawking and worked for years as CTO of Microsoft (which left him with a healthy amount of spare change). But cooking, and particularly the research end of cooking, has always been a strong interest. He studied at the esteemed cooking school La Varenne, apprenticed at top Seattle restaurant Rover's one day a week while he was still at Microsoft; and won first-place titles at the World Championship of Barbecue in 1991.

As he became interested in sous-vide cooking — the modern method of cooking vacuum-sealed foods at low temperatures for hours or days on end — he saw the need for a book codifying the increasingly popular technique. But, with perhaps fewer constraints on him than many of us have, he saw the book blossom into what it has now become: six volumes covering a much broader domain of technologically enhanced cookery, totaling 2,438 13-by-10-inch pages, self-published and sold in an acrylic case for $625. Last year, when it was projected at a mere 1.5 kilopages, it had already garnered blurbs from top names in food like "The most important book in the culinary arts since Escoffier" (Tim Zagat) and "The cookbook to end all cookbooks" (David Chang).

"We're the only combination cookbook studio, research kitchen, and general laboratory that I'm aware of," says Myhrvold as we unfold our napkins. In addition to the kitchen where we sit, the building, which belongs to Myhrvold's company Intellectual Ventures, houses a working biology lab and mosquito hatchery, a chemistry lab, a serious machine shop, a "small things lab" and a photography studio (where the beautiful book was produced), as well as a number of areas demarcated by blue masking tape on the floor, about which I am sworn to secrecy.
