Instrumentation, Control and Intelligent Systems
ICIS research is centered on developing components, programs, systems and individuals for any application that requires monitoring, control, and human interaction. External peer review and advisory committees made up of academic, R&D, and customer organizations provide independent and ongoing review of the strategy within the signature and the focus or research funds.

Research Areas
ICIS hosts a multidisciplinary team of more than 50 scientists and engineers who specialize in five technology areas, including resilient control systems, sensors, intelligent automation, robotics and intelligent systems, and human-system integration.

Facilities and Capabilities
ICIS has a range of research facilities and test beds dedicated to sensors, control and intelligent systems research. The laboratory offers a variety of test beds for control system research, which can be utilized for complex evaluation of control system designs for cyber security, advanced control and operational verification and validation.

Grand Challenge in Resilient Control Systems
There is a preeminent objective of corporate and government organizations for a comprehensive understanding of the security and safety of critical infrastructure, or state awareness. Enabled by this paradigm shift is the move from reactive to proactive control of plants, and mechanisms by which the evaluation and verification of designs is considered from design through implementation, resilient control systems.

A baseball pitching robot that uses a hand developed by Masatoshi Ishikawa and other researchers combined with an MIT arm can lob a baseball at 40 Kph, hitting the strike zone 90% of the time. Ishikawa's sensor fusion project previously created a baseball batting robot. The batting robot relies on a high speed vision system developed by the same researches. If your goal is to understand sensor fusion in robots, what could be more natural that putting these two robots in the same room and having them play ball? Since the slow pitching speed makes things too easy on the batting robot, the researchers are working on improvements to the pitcher that will allow it to achieve ball speeds of 150 Kph. They also hope to improve the accuracy of the robot batter so that it can hit balls towards selected targets. Besides improvements in robot sensor fusion, this research will also lead to improvements in visual collision avoidance and realtime 3D shape recognition. Via PinkTentacle.com, via Mainichi

talking cars 0

Robo tech | 11:28 PM | ,

New York: Talking cars aren't science fiction anymore -- thanks to scientists who have developed a set of algorithms that will allow robotic cars of the future to communicate with each other to help avoid collisions.

An international team, led by Indian-origin scientists Dr Bhibhya Sharma and Dr Utesh Chand of the University of the South Pacific, has developed the mathematical equations which would also instruct robotic cars how to change lanes safely.

According to Dr Sharma, the series of mathematical equations would instruct robotic cars when and how to merge lanes, which could lead to less accidents and ease traffic congestions.

"Flocking is a biologically inspired technique and a strategy commonly used in robotics. One of the advantages of flocking is that robots can work together and achieve what would take individuals far longer," he said.

In fact, according to the scientists, each car will be controlled by a centralised brain guided by a series of algorithms. The brains will talk to each other and instruct the cars to merge lanes and move in formation together.

The team demonstrated the technique using computer simulation and is currently trialling it in two wheel robots.

Team member Dr Chand has said that the cars have targets they move towards and maintain and when the cars find themselves in a merging situation, one of them will be given the position of leader, the rest will follow.

The team has written equations for attraction towards the target, enabling cars to stay inside their lanes and avoid crashing into each other. The challenge now is to allow the robot to automatically plan how to avoid crashing with the side of the road and cars travelling close by, they said.

The scientists have presented their findings at the 1st Rim Mathematical Association (PRIMA) conference in Sydney.

A 14-year-old boy in China's Sichuan Province has been drinking gasoline to become a "valiant fighter" like his hero Optimus Prime in the movie Transformers: Revenge of the fallen, a media report said.
"Since the boy watched the film, he started drinking gasoline to become a valiant fighter," the West China Metropolis daily said citing his father.
He also likes to inhale the liquid gas in lighters, his mother said. He would steal gas lighters from her grocery store.
"We were shocked when one day we found out the boy drank half a bottle of gasoline from our motorcycle," the father said.
"Since my son started drink gasoline, his intelligence quotient dropped sharply," he said. "Before that, he was a very smart boy, and he could even repair the television. But now he did not know the answer of 7 plus 17."
The worried parents finally took their son to a Yibin City hospital, in Sichuan, where the doctors told them that the boy had mental disorders and strong "gasoline dependence".
"Gasoline contains a lot of lead, which can do harm to people's brain. To make things worse, the boy is in the physical development stage, and the lead has caused serious damage to his body," Peng Houquan, a doctor at the hospital said.
Hollywood blockbuster Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen has earned about 400 million yuan ($58.4 million) since it debuted in China some two weeks ago.
